Groundwork Awarded EPA Grant to Fund Local Air Quality Project

The EPA awarded Groundwork an environmental justice grant as a part of the Biden Administration’s Justice40 Initiative for a community air quality project that will train and pay local youth for their participation. Groundwork is partnering with Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center and 12 local businesses to monitor within the quadrants. From Local 12:

"Neighborhoods like Price Hill, usually low-income neighborhoods of color, are on the front lines of this battle, so what do we do with a generational challenge like this? We need to provide generational opportunities," said Groundwork Co-Director Tanner Yess.

According to EPA experts, those who live in polluted neighborhoods are at a higher risk for heart disease, asthma and cancer related to air pollution.

"I was actually pretty shocked to learn that members of my own community were impacted so much by air pollution and how that would impact people in the community's health," said Mohagany Wooten.

Wooten is a junior at Oyler School and one of a hundred or so youth Green Team members who will play a major role in this environmental justice project.”
